If your air conditioner used to kick on, cool the house, and shut off. Now it just runs. And runs. And runs. You check the thermostat and it's set the same as always. So why won't the system stop?

The answer often isn't the HVAC unit itself. It's what's happening above it, in the attic.

Your HVAC isn't broken. It's fighting a losing battle.

An HVAC system is built to reach a target temperature and hold it. When it can't hold that temperature, it keeps running, trying to catch up. That's not a sign the unit is failing. It's a sign the house is losing conditioned air faster than the system can replace it.

Two things in the attic usually cause that: air leaks and inadequate insulation.

Air leaks let your cooled air escape

Attics are full of small gaps that most homeowners never see. Around recessed lighting, plumbing vents, electrical wiring, and the attic access hatch, there are openings that let conditioned air slip out of your living space and let hot attic air in.

One leak by itself might not matter much. Add them up across a whole house, and you get a steady drain that your HVAC system has to fight every hour it's running.

Inadequate insulation lets heat push through

Even without leaks, thin or worn insulation lets heat transfer straight through your ceiling. In summer, that means the heat baking your roof works its way down into your living space all day long. Your AC has to keep pace with that heat load, which means it runs longer just to hold the same temperature.

Insulation that's settled, compressed, or below the recommended level for your area won't stop that heat the way it's supposed to.

Signs it's your attic, not your HVAC

A few patterns tend to point to the attic rather than the equipment itself:

\nThe system runs almost nonstop, even in mild weather, not just during a heat wave.
\nSome rooms stay warm no matter what, especially ones under the roofline or at the end of a duct run.
\nYour energy bill keeps climbing, even though your habits haven't changed.
\nYou feel warm air near ceilings or light fixtures when you'd expect it to feel cool.
\nYour HVAC technician has checked the unit and it's working fine, but the house still won't cool down.

If your equipment checks out but the problem doesn't go away, the attic is the next place to look.

Why an Attic Insulation Quote Makes Sense Before More HVAC Repairs

Calling out an HVAC technician again might fix a small issue, but it won't fix a leaky or under-insulated attic. That means you could pay for a repair, or even a new unit, and still end up back where you started: a system running constantly to compensate for heat it shouldn't have to fight in the first place.

An attic insulation quote gives you a clear answer instead of another guess.

Cornerstone Attic & Home Seal Solutions can assess:

\nWhere air is escaping, around lighting, vents, wiring, and the attic hatch.
\nHow much insulation you currently have, and whether it meets the recommended level for the DFW area.
\nWhat it would take to fix it, with a straightforward quote and no pressure to buy more than you need.

Homes in this area fall under IECC Climate Zone 3A, which calls for a minimum of R-49 insulation in the ceiling. A lot of older homes fall short of that, which puts extra strain on the HVAC system year-round.

The Bottom Line

A constantly running HVAC system is usually telling you something: the house is losing the fight against outside heat faster than the equipment can keep up. Before spending more on the unit itself, it's worth finding out whether the real problem is sitting in the attic.
