Why Are My Energy Bills So High?

You checked your thermostat. You checked for leaky windows. You even asked your neighbor if their bill jumped too. Still, your energy bill keeps climbing, and you can't figure out why.

Before you blame the weather, look up. The answer might be sitting right above your ceiling.

Your attic is doing more than you think

Heat moves toward cold. In summer, that means the heat baking your roof pushes down into your living space. In winter, it means the warm air you're paying to heat rises straight up and out through the attic.

Your attic insulation is the barrier that's supposed to stop that. When it's thin, old, or improperly installed, it stops doing its job. Your HVAC system picks up the slack, running longer and harder to hold a temperature it used to hit with ease.

That's not a small effect. It shows up every month on your bill.

Signs your attic insulation is the problem

A few patterns tend to show up in homes with insulation issues:

\nUpstairs rooms feel harder to heat or cool than the rest of the house.
\nYour HVAC system runs almost constantly, even when the weather isn't extreme.
\nYou feel drafts near ceilings, recessed lighting, or the attic access hatch.
\nYour energy bill keeps rising without a clear reason like a rate increase or a heat wave.
\nInsulation in the attic looks thin, flat, or uneven if you've taken a look yourself.

Any one of these on its own isn't proof. A few of them together is a strong signal.

Why this matters more in North Texas

Homes in the Dallas-Fort Worth area fall under IECC Climate Zone 3A, which calls for a minimum of R-49 insulation in the ceiling. A lot of older homes in the area were built before that standard, or have insulation that's settled and lost effectiveness over the years.

Combine that with Texas summers, where attic temperatures can climb well past what your AC was designed to fight against, and you've got a setup where your cooling system is working overtime just to keep up.

What a free consultation actually gets you

You don't have to guess whether your attic is the culprit. Cornerstone Attic & Home Seal Solutions offers a free consultation for DFW homeowners, and it usually includes:

\nAn inspection of your current insulation, how much you have, what condition it's in, and whether it meets the recommended R-value for your area.
\nA look at air leaks and gaps around light fixtures, vents, and the attic access point, since air leakage often causes as much heat loss as the insulation itself.
\nA straightforward recommendation, with no pressure to buy anything you don't need.

If your attic checks out fine, you'll know your energy bill has another cause, and you can stop chasing insulation as the fix. If it doesn't check out, you'll have a clear picture of what it would take to fix it, along with any local rebate programs that might apply.

The bottom line

High energy bills usually have a specific cause. For a lot of DFW homeowners, that cause is sitting in the attic. A free consultation is a low-effort way to find out, one way or the other, before another summer or winter goes by paying more than you should.

Cornerstone Attic & Home Seal Solutions serves the Lewisville area and the wider DFW region. Built from faith, to build lasting trust, is the standard behind every inspection.
